Dr. Patterson has been a licensed Marriage Family and Child Counsellor for 29 years, and has received specialized training and is certified in clinical hypnosis, neural linguistic programming, the Spear-Raiter Systemic Family Intervention process.

While continuing his work in these areas, Dr. Patterson's current focus has been profoundly influenced and greatly enhanced by his work as a certified practitioner of Health Realization/Psychology of Mind (HR/POM). This new understanding has positively affected his approach and impact on individuals, families and organizations. Using the innate mental health of the idividual, and working from the inside-out, a new, respectful and empowering model of psychotherapy and intrapersonal change has evolved.

Dr. Patterson has explained the differences between the HR/POM model, and traditional psychotherapy and consulting approaches, as follows:

Rather than there being a search for pathology and correcting what's wrong (which can trigger fear and anxiety in the patient or consulting client), the new approach works using the health of the individual and teaches them how their thinking is creating their experience, not that they are victims of circumstance! Therefore the new HR/POM model works from health, teaches understanding and helps people live in their health, rather than the trap of excessive worrying and the paralysis of analysis. The goal is the empowerment of the individual
